Artist's Statement

Hilary Scott creates large and small sculptures in his studio behind the Somerville, Massachusetts home he shares with his wife and two children. Designer of the City of Somerville's 9/11 and Iwo Jima Memorials, he works in a variety of materials; his guiding principle being to banish the mundane, delight his wife and amuse his children and his clients. During the months of July and August, Hilary moves to the Berkshires, were he serves as the official photographer for Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. Hilary Scott was born in San Jose, CA in 1963 and moved with his family to Stockbridge, MA approximately two years later.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Simon’s Rock of Bard College in Great Barrington, MA in 1983, and served as a Graduate Research Fellow at Kansai University in Osaka, Japan. He earned both a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and was named the William H. Donner Fellow in International Security Studies.
Hilary is a self-taught sculptor, having picked up the craft while creating toys and furniture for his own children. He discovered that adults also appreciated the style he developed in an attempt to appeal to his children: creations that are “big, bold, lots of curves, lots of color, and whimsical, not too dark, not too serious.” His involvement in the Boston arts community began with the first Somerville Open Studios in 1998, while he was still teaching International Relations and Classical Political Theory courses full-time for Tufts University.
Hilary began focusing more and more of his time on his sculpture work, and less on his teaching, and in 2002 switched over to full-time artist. He does still teach, however, serving since 2005 as the artistic director of the SOS Educational Partnerships of Somerville, MA, in charge of both the design and implementation of a curriculum-based arts program in the city of Somerville. He has branched off into other arts forms as well, working as the official photographer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood summer season. His most recent photographic clients include Symphony Magazine, WGBH Magazine, and James Taylor for his 2007 CD/DVD One Man Band. In another turn from the expected, he was also asked to be the Artist Guest of Honor at the 2007Arisia Science Fiction Convention.
His public commissions have included the City of Somerville 9/11 Memorial and City of Somerville Iwo Jima Memorial, as well as numerous large pieces for the Somerville Arts Council and The Brickbottom Artist Association.
He currently creates his works on commission, for private, public and commercial interests from his studio in Somerville.
