I believe a painting or drawing is a moment captured over time. It is the experience of observation recorded in color, value, shape, and composition. When used together, these elements can express the most complicated of subjects in the simplest way. When studying nature and life, one can train the eye to be perceptive and selective, thereby accomplishing a work that achieves a tactile reality, sense of dimension, depth and an acute precision. My process has been inspired by my extensive training, my experiences in life taking cues from nature, and the works of master painters. I have great respect for master painters of the past, for their innovative and creative techniques. Hue, value, chroma and drawing are all equally important elements that are not mutually exclusive. For a painting to be successful, it must remain a cohesive unit. Clarity of thought from inception to completion, for me, is a sign of a strong work, and it is something that is essential to my own art. I invite all of you to take a look at the classes I offer. Are thinking about taking a class, learning more about producing better art, my studio is a creative and inspirational place where I teach students the fundamentals of painting and drawing. Whether you describe yourself as a seasoned pro or a total novice, I have the tools to work with you and help you to focus on elements that you can develop to improve your current abilities. See my website or my studio for class information! |
Figure class: Students will work in pencil, charcoal or oil paint. I will teach about line, form and proportion. The handling of light and shadow as it falls on the human body, giving a sense of weight and dimension to the figure. Rendering volume and color mixing via chroma, value and hue. Shape and composition being taken into account for arriving at a solid and integrated work, with an emphasis on realism and naturalism to the human body. I am offering 2 separate classes with long poses. Still life, Bargue and Cast class: In this class attention to basic drawing skills via complex shape organization and compositional structure will be taught throughout the term. Bargue drawings are a process of flat copy work to teach a student about the mechanics of pencil and charcoal. Learning how to manipulate materials to express ideals of classical beauty thru reproduction of classical lithographs. Cast drawing is a continuation of the Bargue adding the complexity of rendering a 2D drawing as if it were a 3D reality, with a heavy concentration on values and accuracy. Usually cast work is charcoal on paper or oils on canvas. The still life component is for people to explore all the previous skills combined in a synergy of color and shape in order to push ones skills to new levels. Also using ideas like metaphor or purpose to a still life setup. Typically Still life work is oil on canvas, but it can also be pencil on paper as well as charcoal on paper. |
