Artist’s Statement: My paintings are a window on our world; humorous, serious, grotesque and serene. They are an observation and a passion, an escape and a commitment. In a darkly humorous way, my vegetables convey aspects of the human condition. They are narrative images, whether the subject is the isolation of being different, the clinging fear of refugee families, the scrutiny at a bus stop, or the energy of children diving for pennies. In contrast, the landscapes and creatures are an escape back to places I’ve been, and a commitment to the natural world I love so well.

Sarah Gerould is new to the Somerville scene, having recently moved from Virginia. (The weather proved irresistible.) She has shown her work at the Kennedy Center for the Arts, the Torpedo Factory, and local venues in the DC area. She was the official artist for the Reston Farmers Market. Her work includes vegetables, landscapes, and combinations of the two. She started out in watercolor, and moved into oils in 2009. In addition to her artistic activities, she worked in responsible positions at the headquarters of the US Geological Survey in Reston, VA.
